Fair Work Act transitional arrangements updated

Posted on 17 June 2009 by admin

Hundreds of NTEU members sent an email to their Federal Member of Parliament, and to Julia Gillard (Industrial Relations Minister), protesting transitional arrangements in the Fair Work Act that would have effectively banned industrial action authorised before 1 July.

Thanks to this effort, and the lobbying work of the NTEU and other unions, the Federal Government has announced that they will be amending the transitional arrangements to remove this loophole.

This week, junior minister Senator Mark Arbib from New South Wales announced that the Federal Government would move further amendments, including one to allow “limited” preservation of WR Act protected action ballot authorisations after July 1, “on application from Fair Work Australia”.

As a result, no ballots will need to be reheld. However, the NTEU will be required to re-notify any industrial action after 1 July to university managements.
